NEW MAC SETUP & MIGRATION

Making the Move to a New Mac Easier

Getting a new Mac should be exciting, but transferring everything from your old computer and getting comfortable with a new system can sometimes be challenging.

I can help you through every stage of the transition – from choosing the right Mac and preparing for migration to transferring your information and getting everything working properly.

Most setup and migration assistance can be provided remotely, so you don’t necessarily need an in-person appointment.

PREPARING FOR YOUR NEW MAC

A Little Planning Makes a Big Difference

Before purchasing a new Mac, it’s important to consider your current computer, software requirements, storage needs, existing backups, and how you’ll transfer your information.

I can help you choose the right Mac and configuration, ensuring you have enough storage for your existing data and room for future growth. We’ll also consider how your needs might change over time, including new applications, increased storage requirements, and software compatibility, to help you make a purchase that will serve you well for years to come.

We’ll also review your existing peripherals and connections to determine whether adapters or other accessories will be needed with your new Mac.

Before the migration, we’ll want to make sure you have a current backup of your old Mac and that it can be accessed from your new computer.

TRANSFERRING YOUR INFORMATION

Apple’s Migration Assistant can transfer user accounts, applications, documents, and settings from an older Mac to a new one.

Getting the migration process started can be confusing, particularly if you’re unfamiliar with the steps involved. I can guide you through the process, helping you select the appropriate options and get the transfer underway.

If problems arise during the migration, I can troubleshoot the issues and help resolve them. If Migration Assistant isn’t successful, I can guide you through alternative methods for transferring your information.

The goal is to make the transition as smooth as possible while preserving your important files, applications, and settings.

POST-MIGRATION SETUP

Getting Everything Working Properly

Once your information has been transferred, there’s often additional work needed to make sure your new Mac works as expected.

I carefully review your applications and settings to ensure everything works properly on your new Mac, including the programs and services you relied on with your previous computer. Some applications may need updating, reauthorization, reconfiguration, or replacement, while others may require troubleshooting.

This includes checking Photos, email, calendars, contacts, notes, web browsers, passwords, Microsoft Office (if needed), and other applications and services you use. I also review security and malware protection, backups, printers, scanners, and Zoom and/or other video meeting software settings.

The goal is to make sure your new Mac is fully functional and familiar, with your applications, accounts, and important information working properly so you can pick up where you left off.

GETTING COMFORTABLE WITH YOUR NEW MAC

Exploring New Features and Capabilities

A new Mac often comes with a newer version of macOS, introducing new features, capabilities, and changes to familiar ways of doing things.

I can help you understand what’s changed, explore new features, customize your settings, and take advantage of capabilities that may not have been available on your old computer.

If you’d like more extensive instruction, I also offer Training & Personalized Guidance, tailored to your interests and experience.
