THE TUNE-UP
Keeping Your Mac Running Smoothly
Even when your Mac appears to be working normally, there may be issues affecting its performance, security, or reliability.
A Mac+Tech Tune-Up is a comprehensive review of your computer’s overall condition, designed to identify potential problems, resolve existing issues, and help keep your Mac working reliably.
Most Tune-Up services can be performed remotely, without an in-person appointment.
WHAT DOES A TUNE-UP INCLUDE?
A Thorough Review of Your Mac
A Tune-Up covers your Mac’s performance, storage, software, security, backups, and overall reliability. It also considers whether the computer continues to meet your current and anticipated needs.
System performance and available storage are examined for conditions that may be contributing to slowdowns or unexpected behavior. Unnecessary files, outdated software, and applications that may be affecting performance are also evaluated.
The current version of macOS and installed applications are examined to determine whether updates or upgrades would be beneficial. Compatibility with your Mac and the software you depend on is an important consideration before making changes.
Security and privacy are another important part of the process. Relevant system settings, malware protection, and potential security concerns are reviewed, with appropriate adjustments made where needed.
Existing backup arrangements, including Time Machine and other backup services, are checked to identify configuration problems or gaps in protecting important information.
Diagnostic tools are also used to investigate errors, application crashes, unusual behavior, and other indications of software or hardware problems. When issues are discovered, appropriate repairs or adjustments can often be made during the session.
The Tune-Up also includes an assessment of whether your Mac remains suitable for your current and anticipated needs. Its age, hardware capabilities, software compatibility, and potential for future upgrades are considered when determining whether continued maintenance is worthwhile or replacement may be a better option.
ADDRESSING EXISTING PROBLEMS
Taking Care of Lingering Issues
Over time, small computer problems can accumulate. An application may behave unpredictably, a website may not work properly, or an error message may appear repeatedly without an obvious explanation. Maybe you just want to change the default font when you create a new document.
A Tune-Up provides an opportunity to investigate these lingering problems and address issues that may have been overlooked or put aside.
Keeping a list of problems and questions as they arise can be helpful. During the session, we can review these together, investigate their underlying causes, and resolve them whenever possible.
RECOMMENDATIONS & IMPROVEMENTS
Maintaining, Upgrading, or Replacing Your Mac
Not every issue requires an immediate repair, and installing the latest software isn’t always the best choice for every computer.
Following the Tune-Up, we’ll review the findings together, discuss anything that needs attention, and consider improvements based on your Mac’s condition, capabilities, and how you use it.
Recommendations may include adjustments to system settings, better storage management, software updates or replacements, and improvements to backup or security arrangements.
An important part of this assessment is determining whether it makes sense to continue using your existing Mac. Older computers may no longer support current versions of macOS or important applications, while hardware limitations can affect performance and reliability.
The new Siri AI represents a significant advance in how people can interact with their Macs, potentially making everyday tasks easier and more intuitive. For some users, these capabilities could be transformative, while others may have little need for them. Because Siri AI requires both compatible hardware and a sufficiently recent version of macOS, its availability is another important consideration when evaluating whether to replace an older Mac.
When these limitations become significant, replacing the computer may be more practical than investing additional time and money in maintaining or upgrading it.
The decision should also reflect your budget, anticipated needs, and the cost of available alternatives. If your current Mac continues to serve you well, there may be no reason to replace it. If replacement is advisable, I can help you select a new Mac that meets your needs without unnecessary expense.
The goal is to help you understand your Mac’s condition, address issues that need attention, and make informed decisions about maintaining, upgrading, or replacing it.
READY FOR A TUNE-UP?
Whether your Mac is experiencing problems, showing signs of age, or simply needs a thorough review, a Tune-Up can help identify issues, improve reliability, and determine whether maintaining, upgrading, or replacing your computer is the best course of action.
